Global Discourse:
A Developmental Journal of Research in Politics and International Relations
ISSN 2043-7897
Background
There has been a proliferation of journals over the past decade. While some of these publications have stimulated the development of new approaches or created forums for neglected subjects, many have attracted a negligible readership with little engagement between author and audience. Postgraduate journals, in particular, have often been used as ineffective instruments of ‘CV-hoop jumping’. Promising research projects are often ended by authors relinquishing copyright to unread and unrated journals.
About the Title
Global Discourse is a biannual, open access, developmental journal of research in applied contemporary thought. The journal is, fundamentally, an interdisciplinary, issue-oriented journal, operating at the intersection of politics, international relations, sociology and social policy. Its aim is to lead discussions and debates on current affairs by promoting intensive, discursive evaluation of ideas, tenets and practices. The core tenet is that key issues in current affairs can be addressed only through the creation of forums in which to apply theoretical approaches developed in artificially isolated disciplines. The journal seeks both to harness and lead the emerging institutional drive towards interdisciplinary collaboration and interaction throughout the social sciences and humanities in order to present distinctive, debate-provoking perspectives on the key issues of the day.
In doing this, the journal has no fixed ideological affiliation and, indeed, strives to accommodate genuine diversity of perspectives. With a strong, international Advisory Editorial Board, Global Discourse seeks to maximise the potential of research projects, employing a constructive review process which promotes, rather than stifles, argument.
The journal seeks to achieve its aims by employing a number of innovative features: first, each issue is allocated a topical theme; second, each article is published alongside a 3,000 word substantive reply completed by an established referee in the field; third, book review symposia, rather than single book reviews, are employed, with intensive discussion of a single text by several reviewers published alongside replies from the author/s; fourth, readers are invited to participate by submitting substantive, formal responses to published material through moderated discussion boards. Papers are solicited specifically for each issue through calls for papers circulated over 12 months in advance of publication. Certain issues are associated with specific conferences, symposia and workshops, such as previous issues on Anarchism and IR and contemporary Marxism. However, Global Discourse does not publish non-peer reviewed conference proceedings, with all papers double-blind peer-reviewed by established figures in the field prior to publication. Future themes include genital cutting and human rights, IR and recognition theory, empire at a time of austerity and tyrannicide.
